Acad's Oscar dilemma

And also the champion is... definitely not the Academy. The large surprise wasn't the exit of Brett Ratner as Oscar producer but the truth that he was hired to begin with. It had been another instance of AMPAS executives' dogged and misguided "let us get stylish" push to lure TV audiences. And once more, that tactic has switched around and bitten Oscar on his golden hind.Eddie Murphy's withdrawal as host on Wednesday was virtually another shoe shedding. However the whole flap points in the central dilemma for that Academy of movement Picture Arts & Sciences: Inside a world that's quickly altering because of the economy, technology and audience tastes, the entertainment business needs to forget about old business models. The format for that kudocast was radical in 1953, however the Academy and producers of other public honours shows, which simply imitate the Academy awards, desire to make bold choices to create the kudocasts in to the twenty-first century. The employing of Ratner, to create new perspective towards the show, wasn't exactly bold: Cosmetic tweaks to some set-in-stone structure aren't the answer. If Academy honchos wish to have a celebration that honors 24 groups equally around the air, that's their right when they and ABC executives wish to have a gangbusters Television show that pulls huge audiences, that's great. But, clearly, they cannot have both. And they've to determine that they want.In some way, somebody got the concept that the answer is to usher in fresh contributing factors but pressure them to stick to that old format. Believe me, AMPAS executives could hire Attacking Young Boys and also the entire Kardashian family to host the show also it still will not obtain the rankings they really want. The backlash against James Franco's hosting in Feb was from proportion to his performance (the media was much less critical of co-host Hathaway As Catwoman). Franco is really a gifted actor along with a multifaceted intellectual, which aren't the very first characteristics one seeks within an Oscar host. Casting is vital in Hollywood, and Franco and Ratner were both oddly cast. And also the media fury over Franco's work appeared a veiled slap in the Academy for getting hired him.Similarly, Ratner has proven a effective director, but he's also cultivated an event-fratboy image. When he ongoing to push that image in the interview on "The Howard Stern Show" Monday, AMPAS executives were shocked. But what did they expect?Ratner's homophobic remark was appalling and deserved to become addressed. Nearly as appalling was AMPAS leader Tom Sherak's Monday whitewash from the comment: "He apologized and we'll move ahead He's many buddies who're people from the lgbt community." This is a 2011 variation from the old "a number of my close friends are..." excuse.Tom, I believe you are an excellent guy, but when I am ever inside a PR scrape, do not arrived at my defense.Sherak required a decidedly different tone in the comments after Ratner's bow-out Tuesday, saying Ratner "did the best factor for that Academy as well as for themself His comments were unacceptable."On Wednesday mid-day, AMPAS introduced its new producer: John Grazer (incidentally, a producer of "The Dilemma," which featured an unfunny anti-gay joke that Imagine declined to get rid of despite protests).Grazer. Hmm. Clearly, the Academy is not prepared for a bold decision. But maybe the coming year. Contact Timothy M. Grey at tim.grey@variety.com

Brett Ratner Describes His Oscar Resignation

Surprise! Brett Ratner Out As Oscar Producer Academys Statement On Brett Ratners Resignation Brett Ratner has released instructions towards the entertainment industry explaining why he's resigned as producer from the Oscars carrying out a litany of spectacularly dumb and insensitive claims made while marketing his new film Tower Heist. I’m told that despite an increasing groundswell of Academy people with Ratner’s mind, the Academy likely might have grudgingly hung inside with Ratner as producer. He managed to get simple for them by bowing out. Here's his statement: A Wide Open Letter towards the Entertainment Industry from Brett Ratner Dear Co-workers, During the last couple of days, Ive become a highly-deserved earful from most of the people I admire most within this industry indicating their outrage and disappointment within the hurtful and stupid a few things i stated in many recent media looks. For them, and also to everybody Ive hurt and upset, Id prefer to apologize openly and unreservedly. As difficult because the last couple of days happen to be for me personally, they can't rival the expertise of any youthful guy or lady that has been the prospective of offensive slurs or derogatory comments. Plus they pale compared to what any gay, lesbian, or transgender individual must cope with because they confront the numerous inequalities that still plague the world. A lot of artists and craftspeople within our business are people from the LGBT community, also it pains me deeply which i might have hurt them. I ought to have known all of this along, but a minimum of Yes, it now: words matter. Getting love inside your heart does not count for much if what arrives of the mouth is ugly and bigoted. With this thought, and also to all individuals who naturally believe apologies aren't enough, please realize that I'll be taking real action within the coming days and several weeks in order to fit everything in I'm able to both appropriately and personally to assist eliminate the type of thoughtless bigotry Ive so foolishly perpetuated. Like a initial step, I known as Tom Sherak today and resigned like a producer from the 84th Oscars telecast. Being requested to assist placed on the Oscar show was the proudest moment of my career. But as painful because this might be for me personally, it might be worse if my connection to the show may be a distraction in the Academy and also the high ideals it signifies. Thx to GLAAD for engaging me inside a dialogue by what we are able to do together to improve understanding of the key and troubling issues this episode has elevated and that i anticipate dealing with them. I'm incredibly lucky to possess a career within this business which i love wonderful my heart and also to have the ability to work alongside lots of my heroes. I deeply regret my actions and i'm going to study from this experience. Sincerely, Brett Ratner

Peter Liguori Mulling Exit From Discovery

January 19 would mark Peter Liguori’s second year anniversary at Discovery Communications but he may not be there to celebrate it. I have learned that the veteran TV executive is considering leaving Discovery, where he serves as COO, before the end of the year. A rep for the company declined comment beyond noting that Liguori “is an executive in good standing and working hard for the company across a number of areas.” Liguori indeed has handled multiple areas since joining Discovery. As COO, he has oversight of Marketing, Discovery Studios, Corporate Communications and Corporate Affairs, Business Affairs, and Media Technology, Production and Operations for the company and has served as the lead executive representing Discovery Communications in its 2 joint ventures, OWN: The Oprah Winfrey Network, and The Hub. Liguori was hands-on involved in the launch of OWN and in May, he was named interim CEO of the struggling cable network following the departure of Christina Norman. Two months later, Winfrey took over the CEO position, and Liguori involvement decreased to a point of him having no a day-to-day role at the channel.

New American Reunion Trailer Arrives

Times have changed...Even though the last trailer was a mere two weeks ago, the team behind American Reunion is keeping up the promo barrage, this time with a new full regular trailer giving us a proper glimpse at the film after a couple of teasers. Take a peek below.Reunion is, as the title suggests, a chance to catch up with the East Great Falls High class of '99 and to find out what Jim (Jason Biggs), Michelle (Alyson Hannigan), Stifler (Seann William Scott), Oz (Chris Klein), Kevin (Thomas Ian Nicholas), Heather (Mena Suvari), Vicky (Tara Reid) and Finch (Eddie Kaye Thomas). Oh, and of course franchise perennial Jim's dad (Eugene Levy, who will probably end up starring in American Funeral given how he's in all the American Pie spin-offs).While we've checked in on Jim and Michelle's married-with-children life, there's now footage of the other guys, some who seem more settled (Kevin) and some who never change (Stifler). And from the looks of this, it'll be more of the same, just with the cast a little longer in the tooth. At least they're acknowledging the passage of time and not trying to pass them off as teenagers anymore.Harold & Kumar writers Hayden Schlossberg and Jon Hurwitz have been given the reins this time and the film, called American Pie: Reunion over here, will be out on April 6, 2012.
